Kevin is the popular winner of the Thursday Open

KEVIN Smyth, the popular barman in the Banbridge golf clubhouse, is making a bit of a name for himself out on the course.

In the club matchplay championship he recently ended the hopes of Tom Fee and Trevor Woods in quick succession.

Tom was so impressed with Kevin’s play that he pencilled him in as a strong possibility for the Junior Cowdy Cup team. Kevin fulfilled all the criteria. He was over 20 years of age, had a handicap of 18 and he could play a better than average game.

Kevin’s Junior Cowdy career was over before it even got started. Because, last Thursday, he went out in the Open Stableford competition, shot 44 points, won the top prize and had his handicap cut to 16.

It was bound to happen because he was just too good for an 18 handicap. And he will be much lower before the year ends, you can be sure of that.

Paul Wylie (12) was runner-up in the Thursday Open with 42 points. Paul beat Ross McCandless (6) on countback.

Jonathan Burns (6) won the best gross prize with an excellent one over par gross 70. He becomes the 12th different winner of the gross prize so far this year.
