Kyle lifts the British crown

KYLE Vauls has been crowned the British Powerlifting champion after a dominant display at last week’s event in Ruislip.

The Coleraine man followed up his recent second place at the European Championships in Hungary a fortnight ago by lifting a combined total of 935kg in the men’s 110kg category last Sunday.

Kyle had hoped to break the 1000kg barrier, but in the end he was pleased to have brought the title back to Northern Ireland after a really hectic schedule.

“I had hoped to close in on the 1000kg total, but as I was only able to complete three good lifts of nine it was not going to happen this time,” he told Times Sport.

“I think it maybe was a bit too close to the European Championships, which were just two weeks prior to this event and I maybe heaped too much pressure on myself.

“But I still did enough to win with my opening attempts so it was a great result for me with all things considered.

“I did a 365kg squat, benched 290kg and did a deadlift of 280kg to give me a total of 935kg overall.”

Kyle is now planning to take a bit of a break before getting back to training ahead of the World Championships, which are being held later this year.

“The World Championships are not taking place to November so I’ll take a couple of weeks break which will leave me 16 weeks preparation,” he said.

“The chance to break the 1000kg barrier there and win the title will be my motivation once the build up begins.

“Once again I would like to thank all my training partners at Sam’s Gym, Ballymoney and everyone who has helped and supported me to get to this point.”
