Ladies Fourths are held to a draw by students

AFTER not having a game the previous week, Bann Ladies Fourths faced a reasonable Queen’s Fourths side, hoping to come away with all three points.

Bann took a while to get back into their usual style of hockey, but settled well, with Jessica Faulkner and Chelsea Black using the ball wisely on the right and left hand side of the pitch to create several chances for Bann which couldn’t be converted by the attack of Angela Cowan, Andrea Harrower, Tracy Black and Jessica Faulkner.

Bann kept closing down the Queen’s defence and they were rewarded with a well worked goal where a superb ball from Julie Pollock found Andrea Harrower at the back post to give Bann a well deserved lead.

Queen’s kept fighting on for an equaliser but the Bann defence of Cathrine Reid, Andie Martin and Laura Stevenson stood strong to hold off any Queen’s attacks to ensure that they kept the lead. But as Queen’s keep going they started finding gaps in the Bann defence and were using these chances well but were denied on several occasions by Bann keeper Danielle Dickson.

Bann were determined to get another goal, and pushed on, but were kept anyway from any shots by the Queen’s defence, but held on to the lead and went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

The second half started with some good hockey from both sides, running the ball into the right and left hand channels of the pitch, but neither team could grab a goal out of these chances.

Bann knew that Queen’s wanted an equaliser, and they switched off for a while, allowing Queen’s to break free on several chances, again to be stopped by in-form keeper Danielle.

As the games progressed both side looked threatening but the game remained at 1-0.

Bann started looking the more promising side with skipper Lynda McKinley threading together some neat passes with her midfield of Chelsea Black and Julie Pollock, and won themselves a penalty corner which was struck wide of the post.

Queen’s again attacked for their lives and didn’t give up, playing some nice hockey but they unable to find the Bann net on any occasion.

With five minutes left Bann went defensive to keep their lead and fought and fought for the ball. On 47th minute a ball came from outside the circle, and was deflected by a Bann stick into the bottom corner of the Bann net, catching out keeper Danielle, the game had brought level and looked to end that way.

Bann went again, but couldn’t find a winner and ending the game as a 1-1 draw.

Thanks to umpire Julie Craig and Coach Joel Reid.
