Ladies miss out in first game of the Senior Cup

Banbridge Ladies’ firsts travelled to the Civil Service grounds at Stormont for their first match of the season in the Senior Cup.

The first half finished scoreless and at the start of the second period, despite strong defensive efforts, Banbridge were unfortunate to give away a short corner. The ball was struck well and Sarah McCabe, in goals, was unable to keep it out of the net.

The NICS were awarded another short corner in quick succession which led to another goal. The girls’ heads dropped and their play dropped as they started to get tired and the defence soon found themselves overwhelmed in the ‘D’ Which led to a relatively easy finish for one of the NICS forwards.

Passing work from the midfield of Megan McKenna, Orla Magee, Debbie Whitten and Gail McConnell allowed strong linking play with the forward line. This was soon rewarded with a short corner that was finished concisely by Alex Gordon.

Gail McConnell skillfully beat a number of players and worked the ball well back post where Megan McKenna was waiting to sweep the ball into the net to make the final score 3-2. Banbridge next face Cookstown on September 17.
