Ladies see off Annadale

COLERAINE Ladies 1st XI played Annadale 1st XI at home at the University on Saturday afternoon and came away with a well deserved win after a superb display of hockey.

In cold but dry conditions the Bannsiders made a promising start with early pressure on the Annadale defence and it looked only a matter of time before the breakthrough would come. Excellent link work between the midfield of Gaston, Hempsey and Wallace and forwards Jamison, Agnew and Campbell resulted in an early penalty corner. Carol Ann Agnew’s straight strike was well saved by the visiting keeper.

Just before half time Anne Hempsey’s free hit found Agnew at the top of the circle who deflected the ball into the back of the net. At the other end the home side’s defence of Budina, Andrews, Kennedy, Nutt and Adams worked tirelessly in defence and didn’t concede any short corners throughout the whole game. Sharon Kennedy in particular at right back was in fine form.

In the second half the home side went on the attack again with Kennedy, Hempsey and Jamison linking well down the right flank. Jamison’s free hit found Agnew lurking in the circle and her shot on goal gave the keeper no chance putting the home side two ahead. The game continued with the home side piling on the pressure and Agnew got her hat-trick when her straight strike was well saved by the Annadale keeper but she made no mistake with the rebound to give Coleraine a 3-0 win. Many thanks to Buddy for umpiring and also to the loyal supporters for cheering the girls on.
