Landmark championship title win for Aghagallon ladies

St Mary’s Aghagallon added a first Armagh Intermediate Camogie Championship prize to the club trophy cabinet last week with a memorable 5-5 to 3-1 defeat of Mullaghbawn.

The landmark appearance in the city Athletic Grounds provided the Saints with only a second significant title in club history as the ladies consigned to the past the pain of a 2010 final defeat by collecting this season’s intermediate honour.

Two goals across the closing 10 minutes proved decisive to settle a tense tussle.

Leanne McConville, Bronagh O’Neill, Aideen McCrory, Meabh Lenehan, Maria Toland and Meabh Manus worked hard across the defence within a sold unit that improved as play progressed against Mullaghbawn.

Kirsty Shanks and Veronica Branagan proved a strong midfield pairing, with the tireless running of Sarah Mooney at centre forward key to success.

Mooney found the net for the first time on five minutes plus added crucial early points.

Eimear McHenry and Aoibhin McManus placed Mullaghbawn under pressure from the wings - with each claiming a goal towards the final tally.

Megan McKenzie produced a solid overall performance at full forward as the focal point of the St Mary’s attack - with a brace of goals plus points her reward.

Emma Hannon, captain Rosie Lavery, Shannon Hoy and goalkeeper Rosie Montgomery also added to the overall work ethic to help St Mary’s register the special success.

Congratulations go to the players, Edel McConville (chair and coach) and Declan Napier (coach) as St Mary’s now turn focus to the Ulster Championship.
