Larne AC run well in Paris, Belfast and Armagh

Four Larne Athletic Club members travelled to Slieve Gullion in south Armagh on Saturday and all came home with prizes from the first mountain race of the season.

Bryan Magee was first finished for the local club. He started conservatively but made up several places in the closing downhill stages to finish in 15th overall. His time of 37:19 saw him win the Vet 40 category prize.

Andy Gregg finished just behind in a time of 37:23, having made the most of his knowledge of the fastest tracks off the hill.

Dale Smith started fast and had a great run to finish 18th in 37:46, ensuring Larne won the third-place team prize.

Laura Hamill, in her first time over the course, completed the haul of prizes winning the Female Vet 40 category in a time of 50:23 and 39th overall.

Results: Slieve Gullion - 15, Bryan Magee, 37:19 (1st MV40); 16, Andy Gregg, 37:23; 18, Dale Smith, 37:46; 39, Laura Hamill, 50:23 (1st FV40).

Albertville five-mile road race

Seven members form Larne AC made the trip to Belfast for the first road race of the season - the ‘Albertville 5’.

Conditions were good and the field was strong with Fionnuala Britton, double European Cross Country champion, travelling up from Wicklow to compete.

The race was won by East Down’s Brendan Teer in 25:47, with Britton first female in 26:43.

Kirsten Montgomery in her first outing in Larne colours ran a very commendable 47.38. Dan Magill finished strongly to record 34:01 and 68th place overall.

Geraldine Quigley was second Vet 35 in 33:02, but the run of the day came from Ian McCluggage, who in his first road race, recorded 31:03, to claim 37th overall.

Craig Hutchinson was 11th in 28:02, securing first place in the Male Vet 50. Bernard Brady’s race was unfortunately cut short by injury, and the same fate befell Rhonda Brady.

Paris Half-Marathon

Ian Brennan ran the Paris Half-Marthon as part of his build-up for the London Marathon. He finished with an official time of 1:37.50.
