Larne AC runners take part in Glenarm races

DESPITE horrendous weather conditions, 10 Larne Athletic Club runners took to the start line of the Glenarm triathlon and duathlon.

The triathlon consisted of a 750m swim, 24km cycle and a 5km run. The event was won by Larne man, and now recognised triathlete, Brian Campbell in a time of 1:05.54. He saw off Larne AC member Wayne Morrow in the final 5km run.

Morrow, who is from Glenarm, and is currently training for an endurance race in Austria, was just seconds behind Campbell.

Graham Barr finished in fourth place (1:08.28) with Danny Hylands the next Larne AC member to cross the line in a time of 1:15.15 (19th). Adele Neill put in a particularly impressive cycle to secure a second-place finish in the female race (1:17:01).

Dion Wallace (79th – 1:28.20) and Phil Smyth (101st – 1:35.37) were competing in their first triathlons.

A challenging 3.5km run, 24km cycle and 5km run lay ahead of the duathlon competitors. Larne Athletic Club’s Mark McManus led the field home in first place with a time of 1:12.49, closely followed by team-mates Davy Clarke (second, 1:12.56) and Justin Maxwell (third – 1:15.48) to secure a one-two-three for Larne AC.

Murray Deller finished in fifth place (1:16.46), with his wife and Kelly, crossing the line in 1:33.28 to secure first place and win the female event.

Meanwhile, the club’s Handicap Series is increasing in popularity. The Seacourt 4-mile Cross Country Handicap and associated Children’s races. This particular race allows Larne AC team-mates to line up alongside each other in a ‘mass start’ - the only one in the series.

The handicap times are then put in place and the corrected times calculated, allowing the race officials to work out the winners. First place in the male race went to Paul Hutchinson, with a corrected time of 44:03. Alan Poag took second spot in 44:04 with Greg Lavery completing the very close top three in 44:13. The fastest time of the day went to Nat Glenn, who ran 22:47 with a handicap time of 21:55 (corrected time of 44:42).

First place in the female race went to Bernie Regan, with a corrected time of 44:38. Ruth Wilson finished in second place (44:36) with Rhonda Montgomery in third (44:37). An impressive run by Lyndsey Haggan secured the fastest female time of the day, finishing in 29:11 with a handicap of 16:55 (corrected time of 46:06).
