Larne set to get its own parkrun event in November

Larne is set to get up and running with its very own parkrun event, writes John Gillespie.

Parkrun, a weekly free 5k time-trial, will begin on Saturday, November 9, starting from Drains Bay car park and through Carnfunnock Country Park.

Andy Gregg, chairman of Larne Athletic Club, said: “Larne is currently experiencing a bit of a running boom with the recent success of the ‘Couch 2 5K’ programmes. It will be great to see a local parkrun to give a new goal for all those new runners and encourage the continued development of running for everyone, right here in Larne.”

East Coast Athletic Club’s chairman, Justin Maxwell, described it as a huge boost to the local running scene.

“It has come at the perfect time: just last Saturday, we had the pleasure of watching our C25K runners successfully complete their nine-week programme. They are all very excited about the prospect of having a parkrun on our doorstep, as are our more experienced members, who regularly travel to other parkrun events seeking a ‘time-trial’.”

Linda McCullough, Director of Development for Larne Borough Council, commented: “It’s great to see such a well-known event come to the borough of Larne, and particularly in such a picturesque setting as Carnfunnock Country Park.”

She added: “I hope that as many people as possible get involved and support parkrun.”
