Larne set to mark centenary with match against Ballyclare

For Larne Rugby Club, Saturday’s match against rivals Ballyclare marks 100 years since the club was born.

It was way back on November 19, 1912 that the Ulster Branch at its general committee meeting, accepted a letter from Larne Rugby Club to enter the Towns’ Cup.

Since then the club has represented the town and the local community, playing at Sandy Bay and from the 1970s on, at their current home at Glynn.

The club is planning a birthday party on Saturday (November 17). It will be an eventful day, with the 1st XV’s clash against Ballyclare taking centre stage. There will also be feast of rugby on show including Mini Rugby (9:45am), Larne GS Medallion v Grosvenor (10am), Larne Under-15s fixture (11am), an Under-13 tournament (noon).

Special guest on the day will be former Ireland and Lions player Stewart McKinney, who will be at the club for a pre-match lunch (1:30pm). If you would like to attend the lunch, please contact [email protected] by Tuesday, November 13.
