Laura and Russell back from triathlon preparations

LAURA Casey and Russell White, two of Banbridge Cycling Club's newest members, have just returned from a nine day warm weather training camp in Aquilas, Spain as part of the Junior Irish Triathlon Squad.

Laura, 16, and Russell, 17, both originate from a swimming background but have recently decided to concentrate their efforts on Triathlon where they combine their swimming experience with cycling and running after attaining the required standard at a Triathlon Ireland Identification Day.

Travelling to Spain a squad of only 11 triathletes from the length and breadth of Ireland, Laura and Russell were the only attendees from Northern Ireland to make the trip.

Combining all three disciplines is no mean feat for the young Banbridge athletes, having to dedicate several hours each day to cover the demands of the sport means training up to 13 sessions per week, along side a busy exam schedule.

This July The European Triathlon Championships are being held in Athlone, Ireland. Both Laura and Russell are training with the aim of being selected by Triathlon Ireland to compete in these Championships against the cream of Europe’s Junior Triathletes.

Russell and Laura have found the training and competing with Banbridge Cycling Club is helping them a lot in their quest to fulfil this aim, and in return Banbridge CC wish both these young athletes a healthy and fruitful future in their triathlon careers.
