Leaders Garvey see off Seconds

BANBRIDGE Ladies Seconds faced top of the table Lisnagarvey at Comber Road last Saturday.

On their last meeting it was Banbridge who came away victorious with the points so the team knew that Lisnagarvey would be reluctant to allow a repeat of this, especially on their home turf.

A high tempo game from the off with both sides jostled for position. In the opening phases of the game it was Banbridge that found themselves on the back foot playing reactive hockey. Megan Whan made a welcome return to the side and combining well with Rosemary Waddell helped Banbridge to get a grip of the game and begin to take control.

Jessica Hassan and Jo-Anne Lyttle work particularly well together to create width and oppertunties to attack down the flanks. Unfortunately though Banbridge where caught out on a turn in play as a Lisnagarvey free in bobbled into the Banbridge circle and a waiting ‘Garvey player slotted it home. Sarah Dale made a spectacular save on the line, denying Lisnagarvy their only real threat in the remainder of the match. The first half closed 1-0 to ‘Garvey.

The Banbridge team, determined not to be defeated, came out into the second half with renewed energy. Katie Uprichard and Helen Sawyers battled in mid field, while Robyn Turkington was instrumental in feeding the ball through to the forward line.

Player of the match Nadene Black converted second phase short corner play to level the score with minutes reaming on the clock. The Banbridge girl’s gained a valuable point from this match and continue their fight for promotion in the last few games of the season.

Many thanks to Robin and to Dave Smyth for umpiring.
