Leagues almost wrapped up

ALL four divisions in the Armagh All-County leagues are almost wrapped up with only a small number of outstanding issues remaining to be resolved.

There has been bad news for two local clubs, namely St Peter’s and ire g, who have been relegated to the third and fourth divisions respectively.

The Whites had a commendable Championship campaign, giving a good account of themselves against both Tr na ng and Cullaville, but it will possibly take at least a year in the third division to mature their young minor players who missed out on a Championship final place, going down to Shane O’Neill’s in the semi. Despite starting well, ire g struggled towards the end of the season and now face the drop along with Lissummon.

In Division One, the real success story has been Maghery who finished second behind Crossmaglen, having been promoted at the end of 2009 in a play-off. At the bottom, both Mullaghbawn and Killeavey, who went down last season but survived as a result of league realignment, again face the drop to the second division.

Both Clan na Gael and Sarsfields consolidated their top-flight status this season but will have another fight on their hands in 2011 considering that Ballymacnab and either Armagh Harps or Granemore, who are involved a promotion play-off, are all strong teams.

In the second division, Wolfe Tones, Clann ireann and Tr na ng all finished in comfortable positions and in the third division, St Paul’s finished on 21 points in mid-table.

This Sunday, beaten Minor Championship finalists Tr na ng play Crossmaglen in the All-County League semi-final at Abbey Park (2pm). In the other semi-final, St Peter’s will face Killeavey at Madden which also has a 2pm throw-in time. Both North Armagh teams could be fancied to reach the final.
