The Bulgarian, who has been coaching here since 2004, believes it would be a massive boost to the sport.

“Some areas have domes in place providing a covered area and they are a big success.”

The 37-year-old has been playing tennis since he was aged just 6, and is still playing competitive tennis on the Over 35s’ circuit. Recently he reached the semi-finals in both singles and men’s doubles at the famous Devonshire Club in Eastbourne.

“I think it is important as a coach to still be active. I enjoy playing and this year went to Sofia for the European Championships and hope to go back again next year,” added Alex.

“ I take in as many competitions as I can. When I was a teenager I played two years on the professional circuit before going back to university and then into coaching.”

Alex believes the success of Andy Murray at Wimbledon this year has helped the sport locally. “Usually around Wimbledon you get added interest, but this year Andy’s win really inspired a lot of young kids to come along over the summer.”

Lurgan Tennis Club continue with their training over the winter and on the youth side things are looking good. “We have Emma Coulter showing great potential and she is a member of the Ulster Inter-pro squad,” said Alex.
