LEWIS LIFTS ULSTER TITLE

Lewis Dickey produced a superb performance on Saturday to get a unanimous decision and win the 75kg Youth 1 Ulster Championship.

Alan ‘Spike’ Martin spoke about Lewis’ win. “I am absolutely delighted. Lewis boxed last Sunday against Oran Naughton from the Dockers Club, Belfast and won on points to book his place in the final.

“Unfortunately after that fight he was unwell and had a bad chest infection. He was off almost all week and had little or no preparation for the final. All credit to Lewis he felt strong on Saturday and although he had lost quite a bit of weight he just managed to make the weight limit.

“Lewis fought David McDonagh from Clonoe Club in Coalisland and although he is a seasoned fighter he had no answer for Lewis’ power and Lewis won with a unanimous decision. I had a lot of confidence in Lewis going in to the final and he didn’t disappoint.

“Our aim for Lewis is the All Irelands at Easter and I believe he is more than capable of winning an All Ireland title. I have to thank my coach Declan McKernan who looked after Declan at the final. Declan has done a lot for the club since he joined us and although that was his first experience of coaching a fighter at an Ulster Championships, he did a great job with Lewis.

“We only had one fighter in the finals but Micky Fleming at Churchlands Golden Gloves in Coleraine had four boxers, winning three Ulster titles which is great for this area. I was particularly delighted to see Matty Boreland won an Ulster title.

“Matty fought against America in the Belfast Beltway Boxing Classic in the Titanic Ballroom in November and he will be travelling to America with Brendan Lowe and myself in April when we take a team of fighters from Northern Ireland to Washington DC for the return visit. We will also be taking James Boyle and Travis Heaney from Scorpion which will be a great experience for the lads.

“The team we are taking to America is a very strong one and I am excited about the prospect, however before that we have the Antrim 6s when we will have six fighters taking part. After that we have the Antrim opens which will qualify a fighter for the All Ireland Championships at Easter. It’s all go at the moment and the boxing season is really hotting up and we have a lot of things happening over the next few weeks.”
