Limavady make semi-finals of NW Cup

LIMAVADY United booked a place in the North West Senior Cup semi-finals after this win over Tobermore United.

Limavady United (1) 2

Hutchinson (1min), Clarke (90mins)

Tobermore United (0) 0

United produced a below par performance, whilst suffering a blow when Shane Jennings was forced to retire after ten minutes with a dislocated collar bone.

The Roesiders had the best possible start. Trevor Hutchinson scored within in 38 seconds. The goal was all about Jennings' persistence, as he skinned his marker, crossed for his strike partner to score the simplest of goals.

The next fifteen minutes were all Tobermore, with at least six excellent chances to equalise. First the lively Lamont latched on to a free kick but headed narrowly wide.

Then the returning Davy Patton had an excellent chance to score against his former club, but shot straight at Chris Anderson.

Almost immediately Lamont was set up by Patton but shot wide, and then Patton shot over the bar from the edge of the box.

Campbell then had a volley from just outside the box which Anderson pushed out for a corner.

Tobermore's best chance came when Magill got on the end of a cross inside the six yard box and with Anderson beaten, John Neill hacked the ball away from under the bar.

After such a frenetic start, in which the Roesiders were being stretched to the limit, they finally managed to break out and first Ciaran Clarke had a header over the bar, followed by Paul Owens shooting wide after he had robbed a defender.

As the half drew to a close captain Lee Patrick had a header from a corner cleared off the line by the visitors.

The second half did have fewer chances, though Patton in particular will be cursing his luck as he wasted another gilt edged chance from a corner.

The visitors' centre half Whiteside also had a near miss from a corner.

Just after the hour Hutchinson had a great chance to double the lead when he hit the post with a powerful shot that almost went in after rebounding off the keeper.

Clarke and Hutchinson had chances which might have troubled the keeper if they had been on target.

As Tobermore pressed for the equaliser which they more than deserved Limavady sealed the tie with Ciaran Clarke's goal four minutes into injury time. The goal was created by Paul Owens strong run into the box and cut back which was turned in by Clarke's point blank header.
