Linton and Surgeoner take victory for Ballymoney at Portglenone

And the news got better for the town as rising triathlon star Chris Surgeoner, a student at Dalriada, was the top junior in the Portglenone triathlon and capped this success by coming in third place at the Ulster Triathlon Championships.

Chris is really working hard as he is preparing for the World Triathlon Championships in Canada later this month. It will no doubt be a fantastic experience for Chris.

All of his Tri team mates at BCC Tri and Racing team wish him every success in his appearance on the world stage of this popular and tough sport.

Competing in the same event will be the two famous Brownlee brothers who won gold and silver at the recent Commonwealth games in Glasgow. An astounded supporter could not believe the success achieved by the Ballymoney rider when they approached the club PRO. They were even more shocked when they were told that Chris and Mervyn were accompanied by succesfull results from A Boyle who was third on the podium at Carrickfergus with A1 team mate Steven McAllister eighth in the quality A race at the Madigan GP.

McAllister also won the Ballymoney CC Road Race Championships held this year on the championship Tullaghan’s Circuit from club mate Jordan McCaw and, and club captain Jason Taggart.

Also reprrsenting the club were the BCC Youth team at the Errigal Three-Day International Youth races in Donegal.

In attendence were Shay Donley, Arthur Taggart, Robbie Doherty, Scott Donley and fast improving new youth racer and winner of the youth race at Armoy a few weeks back, Jordan Campbell.

This squad will soon be joined by another batch of new signings to the triumphant Youth team with new U11 racer Ben Culbertson, son of a past member of Ballymoney CC, Chris Culbertson along with recently signed Cameron and Calum Wallace.

All these young riders will be in action at the Irish National Youth Championships being hosted by Ballymoney CC showing the sporting world that Ballymoney has attracted another massive event; first the Giro d’Italia and now the top youth riders will be coming to the town and out lying areas of Dunloy, Stranocum and Dervock on the 23rd and 24th of August.

This weekend will see the Ballymoney fast men at the Ulster 10 mile Championships at Toomebridge. And this Wednesday evening the club will hold their Hillclimb races for the Outdoor Life trophy on the famous 1500m ascent of MillBrae in the Long Mountain. Won in the past by Commonwealth Games rider Davy Gardiner.

This race starts at 7.15/30pm depending on the weather and the light as other years there has been torrential rain. All racers with mountain goat tendencies are invited to ride this lung searing effort of around 4 minutes in length.
