Lions reach final in tag competition

AFTER a tremendous season last year, Lurgan Lions made it to another final in this year’s Ulster Tag Rugby Championships.

The tag rugby season took place once again at Malone RFC, for mixed teams of men and women.

The Lions had a shaky start, but with some new, younger faces on board for the 2012 season, found their feet around the midway point and made it into the Plate, facing some very tough opponents along the way.

Although unlucky in the final, against Corinthians – who beat them 24-8 - the Lions are particularly proud of their semi-final win against The Tropics.

Last Monday night the Lions took on their toughest opponents yet, the Tropics, who were unbeaten in their league and together with the Mengal Taggers, are world record holders for the longest Tag Rugby game played.

The Lions gelled together fantastically as a team during this match, and came from 7-4 down at half-time to win 12-9, giving them a place against Corinthians.

With only one day between the two games there was no time to rest after the hard game. And facing another very tough opponent they knew they had it all to do again. Sadly it was not meant to be for the Lions this year either, but they have once again earned a spot in the All-Ireland Tag Rugby Championship at Suttonians RFC for the second year in a row. There was some great tags and tries from everyone throughout the group games, semi-final and final.

The Lions would like to thank all supporters who made the trip to Malone on Wednesday nights, everyone who supported their fundraising events throughout the year, and all at Malone RCF and IRFU Ulster Tag for a great season.

There will be a bus from Lurgan Rugby Club on August 11 going to Dublin to support the Lions at the All-Ireland Championships. Anyone interested in a place should contact any of team, or the team’s facebook page: Lurgan Lions.
