Lisburn lad brings home the bronze after top display

Lisburn’s 15 year old Ewan McAteer did Salto Gymnastics Club’s proud at the weekend with his bronze medal achieved on the vault in the U16 category of the British Championships held in the Echo Arena, Liverpool.

In order to be a vault medallist, it is necessary to have two different vaults which makes this piece of apparatus more difficult.

It has been a number of years since a Northern Ireland competitor has brought home a medal from the British Championships so this is a great achievement by Ewan who lives locally in Lisburn.

Ewan’s coach Wajdi Bouallegue, who has only been coaching at Salto for the past three months was delighted with the achievement.

He said: “Ewan impressed a lot, especially on vault with his two different new skills. At the competition, other coaches even passed comment on these difficult vaults performed by Ewan.

“In the space of three months, Ewan has added new elements in to his routines on several apparatus and these will be perfected for his next competition - the Celtic Cup in Wales next month. Ewan is a big hope for the future gymnastics of Northern Ireland and his rapid progress to date will prove more success in the near future”

Congratulations also go th Rhys McClenaghan from Bangor who picked up a bronze medal on the Pommel Horse.

It was a great weekend for the Northern Irish boys who at only age 15 have a number of years still to progress and achieve further success.
