Lisburn Ulster Cup team in driving seat for second leg

There was joy for the Ulster Cup team while the Irish Fourball have it all to do in the second leg and the Fred Daly Trophy team had a bit of a false start.

ULSTER CUP

Lisburn made an impressive start to their Ulster Cup campaign with a 5–2 victory over Banbridge in the home leg of their opening round tie.

Randal Kernaghan experienced the highs and the lows of golf early on in his round. He four putted the first green and then proceeded to hole his second shot at the third with a five wood!

The ball landed on the edge of the hole and disappeared into the cup.

He bunkered his tee shot at the short sixth but holed out from the sand for a birdie two. He was four ahead at the turn and won on the 15th green.

Brian Houston won the second match three and two. Rodney Osborne and Andy Neill were both one down at the turn but recovered to snatch vital halves.

Packo Pim was not at this best and lost four and three. Ben Kirkwood and Colin Hill won the last two matches to give Lisburn a great chance of progressing to the next round.

IRISH FOURBALL

The Irish Fourball team, however, didn’t fare quite as well.

They lost 4–1 to Mayo Bridge in the away match, leaving it all to do at home. Ciaran Lyness and Alan Crowe were Lisburn’s only winners.

Only good performances from all the players in the return leg will enable the Lisburn team to overcome the deficit of 16 holes.

FRED DALY TROPHY

There was a frustrating false start for Lisburn’s Fred Daly squad as they prepared to play Slieve Russell at home.

The Lisburn team captain Neil Patton phoned their opponents on Saturday morning to confirm that the fixture was taking place only to be told that Slieve Russell had conceded the match.

So the boys still await the first match of the season but on to round two they go.
