Lisnagarvey four are champions

A Lisnagarvey rink has won the fours title at the Northern Ireland Bowling Association Championships played at Carrickfergus during last week.

John McCloughlin, Gareth McCloughlin, Ivan Craig and Neil Mulholland beat the Balmoral rink, skipped by Clifford Craig, 21-16 in the final.

Garvey were 0-5 down early on but came back to 5-5 and after that it was nip and tuck as both rinks tried to stamp their authority on the game.

Garvey opened up a gap at 16-12 and led 19-16 with an end left, though Balmoral were lying two before Garvey took the shots out and were two up themselves.

In the fours semi-finals, which were postponed because of heavy rain on the Wednesday night and switched to Friday evening, there was success for the Garvey four.

Mulholland’s rink were comfortable 21-13 winners over Matt Reid, Balmoral in the semi-final.

There as disappointment on the Monday night at Carrickfergus when both local open singles competitors lost in the semi-finals.

Lisnagarvey’s Philip Cromie had a close battle with Andrew Corrigan, Portadown, but lost 21-16, while Gavin Clinghan, Dromore, could not handle Marty McHugh, Whitrehead, and lost 21-8.

In the rinks the Dromore four, J. Dawson, G. McDowell, A. Johnston and D. McCandless went out 22-15 to C. Craig, Balmoral, but it was tight enough at times.

- Dromore took a point off NIBA Division One leaders, Bangor, in the re-arranged game on Tuesday night at Holm Park.

James McKenny got the point for the locals, who are virtually doomed to relegation.

But, they did give Bangor a good run in the other games, but to no avail.
