Little Sika Gymnasts make a big impression

With over a 130 gymnasts from all over Northern Ireland it was a big occasion for all of the local gymnasts who were competing for the very first time.

All seven competed on all four events Vault, Bars, Beam and Floor and the club even managed to medal on every piece!

The entire team, aged between 6 and 8 years old, put in strong performances and all of their hard work was well rewarded.

On vault Rianna Robinson’s dynamic handspring flat back won her a Silver medal in Level 3 and in Level 4 Laurie Price’s great vault earned her a bronze medal in a very tough group.

On bars Sika’s six year olds really impressed with Rebecca McClean and Kerry Rose Draine taking joint first and Nicole Davidson following closely for the silver medal in the Level 3 section.

Kerry Rose Draine’s brilliant handstand on the balance beam ensured the young gymnast her second gold medal.

The floor was where the Sika gymnasts really showed their class and had a clean sweep on the podium.

Daisy Deal and Leah Hanson placed third, Rebecca McClean second and Kerry Rose Draine first place - earning her third gold medal in the Level 3 section. All seven girls have qualified for the Northern Ireland Championships which are to be held in Derry in June.

Coach Mary Robinson was delighted with all of the girl’s performances and is extremely impressed with how well the young gymnasts handled the pressure of their first competition.

She said: “These young gymnasts work so hard in gym and it is exciting to see how far they have come.

“We are back into training for the Northern Ireland Championships and hopefully in June we will have some Northern Ireland champions within the club!”
