LOCAL DERBY IN TOWNS’ CUP

LURGAN face a huge task this Saturday when they play host to neighbours Dromore in the second round of the Powerade Towns’ Cup.

The visitors to Pollock Park are two leagues above Lurgan and although they have struggled to date in Qualifying One they will come to Lurgan confident of making the last eight after brushing aside Bangor by a scoreline of 48–15 last weekend.

The sides last met in the first round in 2007 at Pollock Park with Dromore coming through 27 – 23.

Lurgan had a reasonably solid first half of the season, reaching the quarter-finals of the Gordon West Cup. Following the enforced break for the big freeze Lurgan sprang into life with a resounding victory over Antrim, but failed to inspire last weekend in their defeat to league leaders Letterkenny.

Lurgan go into Saturday’s game with the underdogs tag which will suit them well and will be hoping they can produce their best performance and cause an upset.

Key players for the Lurgan team led by Graham Currie are centre Scott Gardiner who recently came back into the side following a broken nose and out half and kicker Stephen Nolan, who returned to Lurgan this season after a spell with Dromore. At lot rests on Lurgan’s pack who need to play as a unit in order to compete with their more experienced opponents.

The Lurgan team to face Dromore is: 1 G Currie, 2 G Wickie, 3 A Mackey, 4 J Catney, 5 C Mallon, 6 A Robinson, 7 J Pedlow, 8 K McBride, 9 C Jenks, 10 S Nolan, 11, J Kingham, 12 S Gardiner, 13, C Harrison, 14, C Wamsley, 15 R Clarke. Subs: D Whittaker, M Campbell.

Saturday’s match will have a 1pm kick off with Italy vs Ireland game in the Six Nations being shown in the clubhouse from 2.30pm.
