Local fishery to host world youth fly championships

The Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland (TAFI) is to host the FIPS Mouche 12th World Youth Fly Fishing Championship from July 21 - 26, with part of the event being held at Woodford Fly Fishery in Carrickfergus.

TAFI organises angling qualifiers every year across Ireland with the winners representing Ireland at the Four Nations still water Championships, European, Commonwealth and World Fly Fishing Championships. This year sees the Youth Championship coming to Ireland , jointly organised by the Ulster and Leinster councils and run on a cross border basis.

Teams will consist of five anglers and one reserve and will be accompanied by their manager and captain. They will be fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout and official practice will be held on Monday 22 followed by three days of competitive fishing.

The venues are spread over counties Antrim, Louth, Monaghan, Meath and Tyrone and include two rivers and three lakes.

Darren Wallace, the owner of Woodford Fly Fishery, said: “It’s a great honour for Woodford Fly Fishery and its members to be given the chance to bring a session of these championships to the borough of Carrickfergus.”

He added: “We are looking forward to greeting the teams from around the world to our prestigious competition venue.

“One of our junior members, Ulidia schoolboy Darren Crawford (pictured) has qualified to represent the Ireland team – the first youth from Carrickfergus to do so – and we wish him well.”

FIPS Mouche (International Sport Fly Fishing Federation) are the regularity body who run the World Championships with Ireland TAFI been one of the founding member countries.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the Loughs Agency are the main sponsors of the event.
