Local girl takes part in Great North run

BALLYMONEY girl, Debby Tutty, competed in the Great Northern Run on Sunday for Cancer Research UK.

Debie recorded a good race finishing in 2:10:30.

Two other Springwell competitors, male captain, Bryan Edgar, had an excellent run finishing fourth in MO45 in 1:19:59 with Alan McKeeman running an even paced race coming home in 1:38:55.

Kenyan stars Martin Mathathi and Lucy Kabuu dominated the 31st BUPA event.

Two phenomenal performances saw them take the men’s and women’s titles.

Mathathi became the 12 Kenyan to win the men’s race slicing nine seconds off Eritrea’s Zersenay Tadese course record with his fantastic time of 58:56.

Lucy Kabuu thrilled the spectators with one of the greatest ever front running performances in the World’s biggest half marathon event as she clocked the third fastest time over the Newcastle to South Shields course of 1:07:06.

Springwell’s Gemma Turley (41:55) won the ladies race at Felix 10K in Dungannon on Saturday. North Belfast’s Conor Magill won the men’s race in 33:30.

Gerry O’Doherty and Gillian Wasson travelled to Belfast’s Ormeau Park on Saturday for the Embankment 5K Road Race. Gerry won the MO55 age category in 19:05 and Gillian finished 4th in the ladies race in 19:15.

Jim Breen was the sole Springwell competitor at the O’Brien Challenge 26 Kilomathon at Lough Fea. Jim finished first MO55 in 2:02:36.

Chrispopher McPeak, Sperrin Harriers (1:47:11) and Denise Mathers, Newry City Runners (2:17:45) were the major prize winners.

Jim and Agnes Platt ran the Belfast Waterworks Parkrun on Saturday. Jim completed the 5K course in 22:43 and Agnes in 36:26. Lagan Valley’s Dave Wright 18:22 and Julie Murphy 20:36 finished first male and female.

Springwell Junior Oisin Brennan was in fine form at the Juvenile Cross Country in Musgrave Park, Belfast on Saturday. Oisin ran in the Under 13 Boys 2K race, he finishing fourth in an exciting finish.
