Local girls help Irish side to cup victory in Wales

Nine girls from Ulster - including four from the Ballymena and Antrim area - were part of an U16 Ireland Hockey 
team which won the Celtic Cup in Wrexham, Wales, recently.

The girls played two international games against Scotland and Wales after flying out on Friday from the city airport.

The first match on Saturday against Scotland was a keenly fought contest with both sides finding the goal and the match finishing in a 1-1 draw.

Sunday’s crunch game against Wales who had beaten Scotland on the Friday, was played in 28*c of heat under clear blue sky and blazing sunshine.

The heat however did little to slow the team down and they remained firmly focused on the task in hand throughout the full 70 minutes.

A scorching forward line and mid-field with a rock solid defence saw the team finish 5-0 winners.

With this win and a draw from the previous day it meant the side finished top and 
Winners of the Celtic Cup 2013.
