Local Ironmen do a lap of the Lough

LOCAL endurance athletes Bob Davison and Keith Clarke ra ntheir way into the history books recently when they took on their version of the Ironman Triathlon.

For those in the know, an Ironman consists of a 2.4mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and and 26.2 mile run to finish; but for this Irish version, the guys biked 13.1 miles to Ballyronan, swam 2.4 miles, biked 13.1 miles back to Cookstown before running 112 miles around Lough Neagh.

The original plan was to run 100 miles, but during a 24 hour run race a few weeks ago, they decided to up the miles and make it into the Irish Ironman, as this had never been attempted before, as well as running non-stop around Lough Neagh. But as Bob explains, it was all for a good cause.

"This series of events was all aimed at raising money for children with cancer and cerebral palsy, who go through alot of pain on a daily basis. What we suffered was small in comparison."

Bob and Keith would like to thank everyone who helped out over the weekend: Grace, Cynthia, Tank, Ian, Dennis, all those who ran portions of the race with them, those who turned up at the finish line to welcome them home.

Also, a special thanks must go to Paul Feeny of Advanced Cyro Care, Donaghmore for his after-care service.

Thanks also to everyone who donated money and the local businesses who put up prizes for the BBQ night: Dragon Palace, Cahoon's Jewellers, Hollywood Hair, Tyre Safety Centre, Knipes Butchers; Gordon's Chemists, JRS Motors, Smyth Cycles, Davison's Bar, United Food Bar, Paul Cherry, RT Autoparts, White Pheasant, Royal Hotel, DAC
