Local lads in Great North Run for charity

TWO University students have taken part in one of the United Kingdom’s most popular running events.

Karl McKillop and Leon Smith made their debut in the Great North Run on Sunday to help raise money for Breast Cancer Care.

The 22-year-olds had been training long and hard for the event which attracts a huge entry list and includes some of the top names in sport and showbusiness.

The boys from the Bushmills area found the time to raise more than £700 for the charity with much financial assistance from the Blackwater Bar in Dervock.

Local TUV Councillor, Sharon McKillop, mother of Karl and aunt of Leon, said she was delighted that the boys were taking part in an event that is famous for its charity collecting.

“They decided to run because of an illness to a family member and they should be proud of their efforts,” Councillor McKillop said.

Leon is studying Civil Engineering while Leon is at University doing a degree course in Building Surveying.

At the time of the interview, the boys were hoping to see some of the top names and perhaps get a chance to run alongside them.
