Local runners set for Paris marathon test

Nine runners from Ballymena Runners club set off with friends and family this week to take part in one of the biggest marathons in the world - the 39th Schneider Electric Marathon De Paris.

The popular Marathon which takes place this Sunday 12th April in central Paris has over 50,000 runners of all abilities, from nearly 140 countries, taking part.

The run commences in the Champs Elysee and offers spectacular views and landmarks along the route including The Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Bois de Vincennes and Boulogne, before finishing in Avenue Foch.

The group travelling is made up of experienced marathon runners – Lesley and Brian McWhirter, Moira Mc Bride, Angela Hopkins, Pamela and John Davis, Mickey Blaney and Pauline Thom.

Also in the partyt is veteran Brigid Quinn who, at the age of 70, is going for her 60th marathon and aiming to beat her previous best time for the distance of 3hrs 54mins, achived in the London Marathon.

Local charities will benefit from the groups efforts including: Habitat for Humanity and The Brain Tumour Charity (www.justgiving.com Moiras Paris Marathon for donations).

Also taking part in the Haribo Marathoon, an accompanying event for children being held on Saturday 11th April, will be Katie Mc Bride.

This covers 1.5 kilometres and finishes under the Eiffel Tower.

Hannah and Sophie Davis will also take part in the Paris Breakfast 5k.
