Local Sporting Giants Exhibition launches celebrations

The Olympic Torch Celebrations throughout the Borough of Coleraine kick off this Saturday, May 26th, with a Local Sporting Giants Exhibition produced by Causeway Museum Services at Portrush Town Hall.

The exhibition is part of a two week Olympic Programme featuring sporting, cultural and arts events that will be of interest to all from Saturday 26th May to June 10th.

The exhibition will utilize both historic and contemporary images to celebrate those local sports men and women of the Borough who have attained recognition at national, international and Olympic level. Eight local ‘Giants’ of the 21st Century will be featured alongside many of the Borough’s other more recent sporting and historic heroes.

Giants such as Graeme Mc Dowell, US Open Golf Champion 2010, Andrew Trimble presently winger for Ulster and Ireland Rugby Union and Alan Campbell, Great Britain’s leading single sculler, and Olympic 2012 are just a teaser as to who is included.

Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, said: “We have such a rich sporting history in this Borough and I’m delighted to say that it is still vibrant and thriving today. With sporting heroes like Graeme McDowell, Andrew Trimble and Alan Campbell, to name but a few, we have so much to celebrate and the Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations are the perfect opportunity to do just that.”

The event opens on Saturday 26 May and will run until Thursday 7th June (excluding Sun 27th May) from 11.30am to 5.30pm daily. Opening times on Sunday 3rd June when the Olympic Torch pays it first visit to the Borough are from 1pm-7pm to coincide with the festivities. Causeway Museum Service is pleased to be delivering the event in association with the NITB who are supporting the Giant theme throughout the year 2012.

A further significant event taking place in Portush on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27 May is the Olympic Torch Celebratory Horse Show. This two day event will take place at ‘The Bowl’, Causeway Street from 10am to 6.30pm and is organised by Causeway Coast Community Showjumpers. This FREE equestrian event is a must for all horse enthusiasts and Coleraine Borough Council commends the organisers for their hard work and efforts in putting together this two day programme.
