Local trio look for glory in the West

PORTSTEWART'S Paul Cutler and Rathmore's Alan Dunbar and Wayne Telford will be among the main Irish contenders for next month's Radisson Blu 88th West of Ireland Amateur Championships at County Sligo Golf Club.

A total of 141 competitors will tee off on April 2. The cut off point for entry was 0.7 with entries from the UK, Isle of Man and one from Germany.

Last year’s winner, David Corsby of Royal Lytham, has decided to pursue a career in professional golf so he won’t be defending his title this time around.

The main Irish challenge is expected to come from last years ‘major’ winners, Portstewart’s Paul Cutler, Robbie Cannon of Laytown & Bettystown, Rathmore pair, Alan Dunbar and Wayne Telford and Limerick’s Pat Murray. Current Irish panellists Dara Lernihan (The Castle), Cian Curley (Newlands) and Paul Dunne (Greystones) are also expected to feature.

The West of Ireland Championship has a special place on the Irish golfing calendar given its task of opening the competitive amateur golf season annually at Easter.

Among the past winners are Des Smyth, Padraig Harrington, Miko Illonen, Rory McIlroy, and Shane Lowry.
