Locals into last 16 of Bruen Shield

THE Banbridge Jimmy Bruen Shield team, captained by John McDowell, went to Spa Golf Club last Thursday evening for their first round match against Rockmount.

Spa was the neutral venue and it is a severe test for any golfer. Team captain John was quietly confident because his team were all very experienced match players.

Things did not get off to the best of starts as Ian Young and Verdun Bond lost 4 and 3.

It was just a temporary hiccup and things were back to level when Luke Woods and Joe Glass won by 6 and 4.

Banbridge took the lead after game number three. Shane Rooney and Shane Bell played sub par golf to win by 6 and 4.

There were two games to go and Banbridge needed to win one of them.

No sooner said than done. Keith Steenson and Ronnie Halliday raced to another 6 and 4 win.

It was all over so Malcolm Russell and Neville Kerr were called in. They too were playing well and they stood on the 17th one up.

This was a superb win for Banbridge and they now go into an open draw for the last 16 teams.

John McDowell is really enjoying the challenge and don’t be surprised if he takes this team to the final stages.
