Long journey is fruitful

The long journey to Ballymoney on Saturday proved a fruitful one with Lurgan Seconds returning with three points.

It was a feisty performance and the young new comers had to compete with a very physical home team.

The pace and passing of the Lurgan girls was the crucial factor and on 17 minutes they scored a fine goal with the last long passes coming from Chelsea Holden and Judith Edgar to find Tara McIlwaine unmarked on the back post for goal number one. Lurgan kept the pressure on thanks to good marking at the back by Demi McCauley and Chloe Neville and the acres covered in the middle by Gemma McBride and Julie Morrow. The pressure gave Lurgan a short corner and after Judith Edgar’s initial shot was saved Tara McIlwaine grabbed number two.

The second half was a reminiscent of a medieval siege with Lurgan repelling all manner of tackles. Julia Kennedy and Sarah Denver stood firm and Clara Lennon and Louise Currie made strong forays into enemy territory. Suzie Taylor was called into action between the sticks but her agility and commitment never wavered.

In the dying moments a slip of concentration when a short corner seemed gave ‘Money a consolation goal.

This Saturday the Seconds host Randlestown at 2.30pm at LJHS.
