Lurgan angler nets£30,000 top prize

LURGAN Coarse Angling Club’s Philip Jackson, who learned his angling skills on the Lurgan Park Lake and the River Bann at Portadown, and his partner Cathal Hughes from Galway have landed the biggest cash prize in match angling.

The duo, who are both sponsored by Traper Groundbaits, banked the top prize of an amazing £30,000 plus Daiwa tackle at the Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championship.

Over the five day period the pair caught 117.560Kgs of fish to beat off the challenge of the other 131 pairs of top coarse anglers from all over the UK, Ireland and the continent, to win a close fought championship by just over 4Kgs.

Second place and a cheque for £10,000 went to Derek Willan and Mark Pollard with a catch of 112.990Kgs. The remaining top five prize winning pairs, all based in the UK were, Kevin Hartley and Ian Fieldhouse, 105.670Kgs; Nigel Franks and Kevin Rowles, 102.050Kgs and Paul Keeley and Lee Addym, 101.880Kgs.

The overall individual winner also came from Ireland with Francis McGoldrick, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, taking home a prize of over £1500 of Diawa tackle. Francis landed a total weight of 74.490Kgs and Cathal finished as runner up with 66.090Kgs with Nick Seddon of Erne Anglers third with 65.520Kgs.
