Lurgan bid to bridge 16 year wait in cup

Standing in their way are formidable opponents top of the table Limavady who are unbeaten in the league this season.

It will be Lurgan’s first major cup final since they last appeared in the GordonWest Cup final in 2000 - and they will be hoping history will repeat itself as they were triumphant on that occasion.

Coach Bruce Cornelius believes the team can upset the odds and win the trophy.

“Why not,” he said. “It is a final and if they go out and believe in themselves then anything is possible.

“However, we have to get it right. Limavady are a very good side who will cut you up if you let them play their game.

“We lost heavily to them earlier in the season, but with a stronger team we lost by ten points in the last encounter.

“We have had a decent season, but I feel the squad has under achieved. I think we were good enough to be pushing for promotion.

“Now they have a chance of finishing the season on a high. But no matter what happens all I can ask of them is to go out and give 100 per cent. That is all a coach can hope for and if they fall short then so be it.

“It is going to be a great occasion and not too many players get to play at the Kingspan Stadium.

“I don’t think the boys will freeze, they are good enough to focus only on the game.

“We know what we are up against, we know how good the opposition are. The odds may be against us but if we stick to the game plan and don’t allow them space or make mistakes to allow them to build up a big lead we have a chance.”
