Lyle leads the way at first round of motocross championship

DOWNPATRICK Motorcross track on Saturday saw the first round of the Irish Motorcross Championship, writes Barry Clarke.

The event had a very good entry with some of the top names and a lot of clubmen taking part. The great weather also attracted a lot of spectators.

Local rider Anthony Lyle from Dromore dominated the Mx2 Clubman class. He qualified quickest and then easily won all 3 races of the day.

John Meara from Loughbrickland had a few tough battles in the highly competitive Expert Mx2 class. He hit a post in first race and damaged his bike but brought it home in 4th place. He quickly got the bike repaired for next race and got a third. He won the final race of the day after a tough battle with Edward Allingham and Glen McCormack.

The Expert Mx1 class saw Gordon Crockard get first place in first race with Gary Gibson 2nd and 3rd place went to Lisburn man Richard Bird. Second race was the race of the day with Crockard beating Robert Hamilton by less than half a second. Crockard also won his final race of the day with Richard Bird 2nd and Robert Hamilton got the final step of the podium.

The next round of the Irish championship is on Sunday 15th April at Doon, Co.Offaly.
