MADDEN SMASHES IRISH RECORD

John Madden of Curran Racing/Bann Wheelers broke his own existing Irish Veteran’s (competitors over 40 years of age) Time Trial record of 19.58 by three seconds at Woodgreen in the Dave Kane/Cycling Ulster Time Trial League on Thursday evening.

The record will have to be ratified by Cycling Ireland but represents a fantastic achievement for this local cycling phenomenon.

David McCann of Giant Kenda was only one second off his current record of 18.21 with his time of 18.22. The event was hosted by Phoenix CC with all proceeds going to the David McCall Cycling Foundation. Many competitors were more than generous, donating more than just the entry fee. It was an almost perfect night for the 60 competitors with little or no wind and the air well oxygenated with the promise of rain which thankfully did not materialise. Many riders recorded personal bests.

Madden’s record breaking feat comes just a few years after he suffered multiple fractures to his collar bone and ribs after being hit by a motorcycle while taking part in an event near Armagh. Despite the high-speed crash the Curran/Bann Wheelers rider was back in the saddle a fortnight later and he has proven himself once again this season. “I’m very happy with my performance and it was great to get the vets record,” Madden said after the event. “When I got to the roundabout at Antrim I knew I was going well as I had already passed two riders. Once I turned into the slight head wind on the return towards Ballymena it was just a case of digging in for the record.” A former triathlon competitor, Madden was Irish champion and took bronze for his age group at the World Triathlon Championships in Canada in 1992. He took up cycling in 2005 and has now won numerous Ulster titles and holds multiple Irish records.

Madden broke the Irish 10 mile veterans record on Thursday evening in a time of 19:55. He intends competing in a series of time trials at Irish and Ulster championships in the near future.
