Madden takes silver at Ulster Time Trial Championships

It was Marcus Christie who recorded a fantastic time of one hour forty minutes and ten seconds over the fifty miles which works out a just below 30 mph average speed.

John Madden of Curran Racing picked up the vets gold, and also second place in the event, with a time of 1:47:22.

Time trial Irish record holder Madden placed an incredible second to Marcus Christie who has been part of the Irish National team and is destined, at just aged 22, to be a cycling professional. Madden, who held the Irish record for this distance until Sunday’s race, was beaten into silver medal spot by rising star Christie who posted a new record time of 1:40:10 however this means Madden will still take gold in the veteran age group and remain the Irish veteran’s record holder with his previous best time of 1:45:19.

Madden, from Ballycastle, had to battle hard for his silver medal since only 10 seconds separated him from the two other riders in third and fourth position. “I was thrilled to beat the other guys and take silver and it is not disgrace to come second to a youngster like Christie who is destined to be a star.” Said Madden after the event.

Madden is still hoping to place well in the national time trial championship at the end of August. Madden will be time trialing next this weekend in the Ulster 10 mile championships. He appears to be really enjoying his cycling and his top results proof that the hard training 
done over the winter is paying off.
