Madden takes sixth place in the Ciclisport Grand Prix

BALLYCASTLE cyclist, John Madden, went one place better than his 7th place finish last weekend on Saturday but it could have been 1st had he managed to stay away on his brave solo attack in the first lap.

Roger Aiken eventually stole the glory and scored his first win in his new Planet X colours with a clear victory in the Ciclisport Grand Prix promoted by East Tyrone CC at Moneymore.

John, of Curran Racing/Bann Wheelers, went clear of the chasing field after the first lap and stayed away for the next two15 kilometer laps until he was eventually joined by East Antrim Junior Jack Wilson. The pair remained the early leaders in the 90 kilometer race as they tried to stay away from the A1 riders who had to overcome a seven minute handicap.

In the last lap a number of the scratch group made contact and Aiken showed his class outsprinting Wilson and Nathan Morgan (Newry Wheelers) for the line. Ballymena's Philip Bremer finished a strong fourth in his first race since breaking his collar just before the start of the season with Curran Racing pair Liam Curran and John Madden taking the next two positions.

The B race for A4 category riders came down to a bunch sprint won by North Down CC's Duane McCreedy from J.J. Connelly (Harps CC) and Bryan Martin (Western Lakes). Fourth spot went to Barry Russell (carn Wheelers) with Stephen Beck (East Antrim –Audi) and Brian Steele (Dromara CC) completing the top six.

The youth racing saw victories for Jake Gray (Orchard Wheelers), Declan Mulholland (Clann Eireann) and Cormac Clarke (Newry Wheelers) in the U12, U14 and U16 events.

John said: "I enjoyed my solo effort for 30k and was delighted with 6th overall. My strength is time trial racing and my form heading into the first events next month would appear to be good. I find road racing fun and it is pleasing to be battling it out with the best riders in the area."

John holds Irish records for time trial over various distances and will continue to use road races to develop his fitness for specialist event. Who knows with this type of form he might just get the 1st place road race result he has come close to soon?
