Madden wins Toome time trial

Ballycastle cyclist John Madden won a 10 mile time trial in Toome which was open to all the local cycling clubs. He was well clear of the next riders time and illustrates his good form ahead of the grueling Tour of Ulster next weekend.

Twnety-eight of the best cyclists in the area turned up on Wednesday last week for the first of the (Spires CC) Trilogy time trials on the Toome circuit. This was a very tough cold and windy night with a very strong cross head wind on the way out and very little advantage on the way back. John Madden of Curran Racing came in first with an excellent time of 22.02, with Derek Ferguson of Kings Moss taking second place by just 2 seconds over the hosting club’s Martin Tohill.

Madden also raced in the Mid Ulster Grand Prix on Sunday and completed the 54mile course in the main bunch. He will have to ride 90 mile stages in the Tour of Ulster so this was a good training session. In Maddens preparations this week he also rode the first Dunlop road race on Tuesday where he punctured in the first lap.

Madden won in Toome this week. Lets hope he continues this strong form to complete his first ever attempt at the Tour of Ulster over the bank holiday weekend.
