Sky Blues Reserves second best at Tobermore

Magherafelt Sky Blues Reserves made the short trip to Tobermore taking on Tobermore United Reserves in what turned out to be a bad day at the office for the Blues.

The Blues came into the game with back to back league wins but were up against a Tobermore outfit unbeaten and current league leaders! The game started in Tobermore’s favour bossing the early opening stages of play and having a couple of chances at goal.

The Blues were a shadow of the team who beat Ballymoney the week before and were disorganised clumsy and second best to all of the play. It was Tobermore who scored the opening goal with some good forward play leading to their striker to score from close range giving Tobermore a perfect start.

Tobermore continued to create chances and got their second goal when a scramble in the box fell to the Tobermore striker who placed his shot into the net.

Manager Declan was unhappy with the Blues attitude and made two substitutions in the first half bringing Aodhan McGuckin on for Wilkinson and Stephen McGuckin for Shane O’Hagan in an attempt to get the Blues back in the game.

The second half started with the Blues much sharper than the previous 45minutes but creating very little chances. Tobermore continued to press in search of more goals but the Blues defence were holding their back line! John McGuckin came on for the injured McCormack.

The game was now becoming end to end and the Blues got a penalty when Conor Bradley was brought down in the box. Conor Bradley stepped forward but his penalty attempt was well saved by the Tobermore goalkeeper. The game became flat when both teams had a man sent off.

The Blues never really looked like coming back into the game with luck and finishing not going their way.

A special mention for Shea Murphy who showed his versatility for the club by playing as a Goalkeeper as well as a winger and striker in previous matches.

Mixed day for U11s

Magherafelt Galaxy v Ballymoney Youth

The Galaxy played out a game of two halves yesterday as they ended up with a point against Ballymoney when it looked like they would get all three.

It was an exciting 3-3 draw but the Blues will come home disappointed that they did not hold onto their 2-0 lead.

Ballymoney had scored lots of goals in previous games and certainly have the ability to play some exciting football. However, this young Blues team is very resilient and they pressed Ballymoney back soon after kick off. Jamie Gribben fired against the keeper before the young Blues grabbed the first goal.

Ryan Lennox played in Aaron ‘The Hammer’ Donnelly who smashed the ball home to give the keeper no chance. The Blues allowed Ballymoney to come back into the game but Caolan Crozier was outstanding in defence and he helped to keep them out.

Donnelly crossed for Conleth Mallon but he headed over when he should have made it 2-0. Donnelly grabbed the second Blues goal before half-time when his free-kick sailed into the roof of the net.

The Blues went out for the second half hoping to grab a third goal to kill the game off. Unfortunately they allowed Ballymoney back into it when they scored a fine goal from a cross. A free kick from distance they flew into the Blues net and suddenly it was all square.

The Blues managed to steady the ship and could have retaken the lead only for some great goal keeping and bad luck. Donnelly was first denied with a superb full length save and this was followed by another ‘hammer’ of a shot which smashed off the post.

The Blues regained the lead when Ross Spears fired in from the edge of the box and the keeper failed to hold onto the ball as it slipped over the line.

As the game neared an end the Ballymoney team grabbed an equaliser to the disappointment of the Blues players.

An interesting game for the young Blues as they showed some excellent spirit but will have to continue to improve concentration to ensure they hold onto future leads. Man of the match was Caolan Crozier, who passed, defended, headed and anticipated everything that came his way. Outstanding performance from a very talented young player.

Magherafelt Pumas v Maiden City Colts

Magherafelt Pumas put in a much improved performance today against Maiden City Colts. The Pumas got off to a great start and created several chances in the opening 15 minutes.

However, they just couldn’t force the ball in or took the wrong option when other players were better placed.

The Pumas then got the reward their attacking play deserved and they took the lead in the 20th minute when Ben Diamond forced the ball home following a good save from the keeper.

From this point the Pumas lost their discipline and tended to follow the path of the ball rather than sticking to their positions. Maiden City soon capitalised on the Pumas sloppy play and drew level with an attack that saw the defence overrun.

Dan Higgins, who was putting in a strong performance in the centre of midfield nearly restored the Pumas lead after he burst through the Maiden City defence and hit a great shot which was well saved by the keeper.

The Pumas level of performance dropped in the second half and they struggled to contain Maiden City’s attacking play.

Man-of-the-match Niall Bateson experienced a bruising half putting his body on the line time and again to stop the Maiden City attackers.

Maiden City made their superiority count and scored 2 more goals to secure a victory despite a gutsy performance from the young Pumas.
