'Mail' man of the match

GLENAVON put in an impressive passing display on Saturday afternoon.

They delighted the fans with their slick moves over the Mourneview Park surface - many of which came through my choice for Man of the Match, midfielder Ryan Harpur.

Having started in what is undoubtedly his most effective position, the former Everton man pulled the strings from the centre and was involved in the build-up for both of his side’s goals.

Against a competitive Coleraine pairing of Tommy McCallion and Michael Hegarty, Harpur and Barry Johnston won the midfield battle and, once settled, both passed the ball well, holding possession for their side at key moments in the game.

It was an impressive all round performance from Glenavon, possibly the best of manager Marty Quinn’s reign to date and the MOTM accolade could have gone to almost any of the players in a blue shirt.

In defence, Hugh Dickson and Jay Magee were rock solid and kept the league’s leading goalscorer Rory Patterson quiet for large periods, despite the forward getting on the score-sheet.

At the other end, Trevor Molloy and Eamon Murray gave the Blues their attacking flair and rocked the Coleraine defence with lively play on several occasions.

James Costello too was improved on recent displays and deserved his goal which will hopefully give him much needed confidence as Glenavon look to go on a winning run.
