Make a splash and do your bit for a very worthy cause

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council's Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre, Coleraine Leisure Centre and Roe Valley Leisure Centre are teaming up to get the community swimming and raise money to raise funds for Sport Relief.

From Friday 18th March – Sunday 20th March, Swimathon will take place in over 600 pools across the UK. Swimathon returns in 2016 with official charity partner Sport Relief as part of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games and registration is now open. After a year away, Sport Relief is returning as charity partner with the aim to reach even higher fundraising numbers than in the past. Swimathon 2014 raised over £2.6 million for Sport Relief.

Swimathon is the world’s biggest fundraising swimming event with thousands of people jumping into pools around the UK. You can choose from 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k individual distances. For those who prefer a team challenge, you could also form a relay squad to tackle the 1.5k and 5k distances with your water-loving friends and lap up the glory.

Roe Valley Leisure Centre’s Duty Manager, Stephen Graham said, “The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Swimathon is a fantastic way to bring our community together, while providing ample opportunity to get fit and healthy in the pool. Limavady residents can take the plunge themselves, along with family and friends to complete a swimming challenge of their choice, all while raising funds for those in need. Between the three Leisure Centres over the past 2 years we have managed to raise over £10,000 for the designated charities and we want to make 2016 bigger than ever!”

Swimathon President and Olympic gold-medallist Duncan Goodhew said, “I love Swimathon because it gives people a goal to train for, an extra reason to get in the pool and above all else it helps to raise money for a truly fantastic cause.”
