Martin wins on back nine score

THE third Wednesday Sweep of October took place last week at the club.

The weather was kind and devoid of rain. The entry was very reasonable and on the day twelve golfers produced under par returns of 37 points or better.

There were five returns of 39 points and so the back nine return was of paramount importance. As a consequence the first net prize went to Martin Stewart. This seven handicapper was through the opening nine holes with 16 points on his card. Pars on holes two, three, four, six, eight and nine kept him in a challenging position.

Splendid golf was very much in evidence on the back nine. He birdied holes eleven and sixteen and recorded his only bogey at the fourteenth. Solid pars on the other six holes ensured him a strong back nine. In fact he excelled with a score of 23 points on this nine. This timely scoring earned him the main prize.

Runner-up was Brendan Campbell with a further return of 39 points. Playing off a twenty three handicap Brendan managed 17 and 22 points for the respective nines.

The third net prize of this midweek sweep went to W R Thompson with a similar haul of 39 points. This twenty handicapper attained 18 and 21 points over the respective sides of the course. A birdie three at the tenth and pars at holes one, three and thirteen were his outstanding returns on the day.

With another return of 39 points Mickey Horan captured the fourth net award. Playing comfortably off an eight handicap Michael played very consistently over each of the nines. He registered seven pars on the outward nine and six on the inward nine. On the day his only bogeys came at holes two, seven, ten, thirteen and fourteen. He required a better back three to hone in on this prize.

With 32 gross points on his card John O’Neill obtained the weekly gross prize. This six handicapper had 16 gross points on each of the nines. Birdies at the third , fourth and fifteenth holes were crucial.
