MARTY'S MYSTERY MAN

GLENAVON boss Marty Quinn is staying tight-lipped over the identity of his new striker.

It was thought that Marty’s mystery man would play in Tuesday night’s friendly with Carrick.

But when the Lurgan Blues emerged there was no sign of the amateur league frontman who is currently on trial at the club.

He is still set to play in some of the Blues’ pre-season games and could make an appearance against Ballyclare on Saturday, but fans are left guessing who it might be.

“We were discussing this at the match against Carrick when we thought this mystery guy would be playing but he wasn't there,” said one supporter.

“There's a guy called Murray that plays for Kilmore Rec, that someone thought it was - he was being looked at by the Crues - but the consensus was that it wasn't him.”

Tony Grant and Mark Miskimmin are the only two senior out and out strikers currently at the club although youngster Michael McKee has played in some friendly matches in recent weeks.

However, this unnamed trialist was included in the Amateur League Select side and Quinn is hopeful that he will help to solve Glenavon’s long-standing striking problem.

“Hopefully we’ll have another striker on board by the end of the week,” Quinn told the ‘MAIL’.

“Certainly, he’ll play a game or two for us in the next few days. It’ll be his first experience of Irish League football but we feel that he could do a job for us.

“He’s coming up from the Amateur League. He played in the Amateur League select squad and I had a look at him in that game.

“He showed a real keenness and willingness to sample Irish League football and Eric Halliday who managed the select side and knows his game inside out, highly recommended him to me.

“I’ll not say anything until we get him on a contract but we’ll see how he does in a couple of games. If his attitude’s anything to go on, he will do well. He’s not a big guy but he’s a Tony Grant style of a player. We’ll see what happens.”

Quinn is also hopeful of Michael McKee making the step up to first-team football and will be giving the youngster further chances to impress in the remainder of pre-season:

“Gerard (McMahon) alerted me to Michael’s potential when he scored a few goals for the Reserves last Saturday. We’ll get another look at him in the coming friendly games too.”
