Matt is Wednesday Sweep winner

THE second Wednesday Sweep of October took place last week at the club.

With the light receding as each week goes by, the entries are also on the decline. With the use of preferred lies through the greens it was noticeable that the volume of scoring made a noticeable improvement. In this midweek event at least eighteen golfers managed a return of 37 points or better.

Matt Connolly registered a total of 42 points on the day to capture the main net prize. Matt is a regular Wednesday golfer and this eleven handicapper played solidly on each side of the course. Through nine holes he had six pars on his card. He birdied the third and incurred bogeys on holes two and six. At the halfway mark he had a very competitive 22 points on his card. His back nine began with a tidy quartet of pars. His closing five holes were less competitive but crucial pars on holes fifteen and seventeen kept him in the winning mould.

Another prominent Wednesday golfer Brian Clarke was second with a sterling effort of 41 points. This eight handicapper was well to the fore through nine holes with 19 points on his card. A birdie at the sixth and pars at holes one, three, five and nine were his keenest returns. He played the back nine in a level par score of 35. Whilst he birdied holes twelve and fifteen he negated these gains with bogeys on holes sixteen and seventeen. Pars were his lot on the other five holes. A strong finish of 22 points ensured him second place.

Thirteen handicapper Sean McCool was third with another timely effort of 41 points. Sean produced a consistent 21 and 20 points over each sector of the course.

Two handicapper Francie Tallon powered his way to the gross award. On this occasion Francie took the honours with a tally of 34 gross points. On the day he dropped shots on holes two, seven, eight and eleven. He recouped some of the losses with birdies on holes one and six. Not surprisingly he achieved par figures on the rest of the holes. With 17 gross points on each nine he duly won the gross award.
