Matt Morrisson North West Junior Cup second round

Roe Rovers 2 BBOB 1

ROE Rovers made it through to the last sixteen of the Matt Morrisson North West Junior Cup with a close 2-1 win against Premier Division rivals BBOB.

Rovers had a pacey attacking line and this kept BBOB pegged back for large periods of the game but Don Olphert’s side defended well, marshalled by the in form Alistair Pomeroy the backline all played brilliantly throughout the game.

The first half was a very tight affair with neither side really stamping their authority. Brian Butcher came close for Rovers but hit the side netting after a pacey run. Peter Whyte had the best chance of the half when Butcher outpaced the left back and drilled in a super centre.

Whyte was surprised by the pace and accuracy of the cross and headed wide when it seemed easier to score. Second half and the pace of Whyte and Butcher kept the BBOB attacks to a minimum but again they defended brilliantly and it took a moment of real quality to eventually break the deadlock. Butcher did brilliantly again on the right and knocked a great ball into the box to the on rushing John Holmes. Holmsey at full stretch and in mid air got the vital touch with the studs to edge the ball into the bottom corner past the impressive Pomeroy.

Butcher had a one on one but again Pomeroy was inspired and thwarted the home side. BBOB had a good share of possession but Tweedy Nicholl was in top form in the centre of the park breaking up attacks and keeping the passing simple and effective. BBOB did well in the wide positions making it a frustrating day for Paddy Logue and Brendan McGonigle.

The experienced Paul Irwin and Gerry OKane both had good games at fullback and young Barry O'Kane had his best game for the club partnering the dependable Chris Harbinson. BBOB had a couple of good chances of their own but came up against Ruari OBrien who was quick off his line to stop one and made a solid block on the other.

Rovers introduced Timmy Douglas for his first game since getting married and he immediately added an edge as did Whyte who switched to the wing. Mark Rafferty also added fresh energy to the flanks and made two storming challenges with his first two touches.

Micky Logue gave the defence some fresh legs and soon Butcher got the goal he deserved with a great move and fine finish.

BBOB had a good shout for a penalty when there looked to be a shove in the back but it wasn't given. BBOB did get a goal for their endeavour when in the 92nd minute a good move from the left saw a half clearance land at the feet of King to tap home. Rovers edged the game and deserved to BBOB defended brilliantly and were well organised and difficult to break down and when they were their keeper was always alert and in top form.
