Matthew wins Easter Medal

YOUNG Matthew Mallon, who came so close to winning the golfer of the year title last season, is determined to make his mark again this year.

He finished in third place in the IPGA tankard two weeks ago and he did even better in the Easter Monday Bank Holiday Medal.

Playing superb golf in very testing conditions Matthew shot a gross 74, nett 63 and he won the competition by three shots.

Matthew was delighted, naturally enough, and his ambition to become a single figure handicapper is that much closer. His exact handicap is now 9.9 (10). One more good round will do it.

Jim Minnis (12) was the runner-up with a nett 66 and Harry Shannon (12) was third with a nett 67.

The fourth and final nett prize went to Alex Clarke (13) with a nett 68.

Seamus McGrath (15) also had a nett 68 and he got the prize for the best senior.

The best gross is not often won with an 80, but it was this time. Colin Wilton was pleasantly surprised as he beat Tom Mulholland on countback.

There were a few near misses. Fergie Cosgrove (14) had a nett 69 and Albert Morrison (19) had a nett 70.

But none of them came close to our winner, Matthew Mallon. Keep an eye out for this lad; he’s going to be very good.
