Maxwell performs well at Ben Nevis Mountain Race

East Coast Athletic club members have been in action over various terrains this week, competing in mountain races, road races, triathlon and last but not least, the dancefloor!

On Saturday, Justin Maxwell took on the prestigious Ben Nevis Mountain Race in Fortwilliam, Scotland. Alongside 600 hardy mountain runners, Justin made his way from New Town Park to the summit of Britain’s highest mountain, which stands at 4,409ft. The Northern Ireland international covered the tough course in 2:13:26 (147th place).

On the roads, Penny Lindsay recorded an excellent new personal best at the Waterside Half Marathon on Sunday; the talented athlete crossed the line in 1:38:20 (23rd place). In doing so, Penny secured also secured the Vet45 title in the 2013 Pure Running Half Marathon Series. The Series has included ten Half Marathon’s, of which, a competitor’s six best times are added together to calculate an overall time. Penny’s overall time of 10:10:51 saw her win by over seven minutes.

Also on Sunday, Gary McKeegan was in action at the annual Stena Triathlon in Newtownabbey. The event, which consists of a 750m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run attracts some of the Provinces top triathletes. Gary showed impressive form, completing the swim in 15:49, before clocking the third fastest cycle time of the day (35:21); he then covered the 5k run in 20:25 to finish in an overall time of 1:13:33 (12th place). A special mention must also go to Larne man, Brian Campbell, who won the event in 1:01:11.

Away from competition, East Coast Athletic Club held its first social evening, with successful ‘Night at the Races’ in Cairndhu Golf Club. The committee would like to thank everyone who supported the event; members, family, friends, horse and race sponsors, and also local businesses Stena Line, P&O Ferries, Boots, World of Flowers, Marty’s Catering, Scratch Nails, Wear it Out and Omniplex Cinema who were all amongst those who donated generous gifts.
