McAuley secures Moyola sweep

BY virtue of a better back nine, 17 handicapper Kevin McAuley won the Sunday Sweep Stableford held at Moyola Park Golf Club. His return of 41pts was matched by the runner up, Brian Wright (14) with Sean McVey placed third on 40pts. Best gross came from Chris Selfridge (-2) with a 71, while the handicap category prize winners were; 0-9, Sean Kerr (9) 39pts ; 10-17, Geoffrey Caskey (12) 38pts (on better back nine ) ; 18 plus, Donal Mullan (20) 38pts.

On Saturday, a similar competition was won by Barry Ross (11) 43pts. Second went to Stanley Thompson (11) 39pts, and third was Rory Gribbin (8) 38pts (on better back nine ). Best gross prize on this occasion goes to Mark Watters (1) with a 71, and handicap winners were ; 0-9, Colin Reid (8) 37pts ; 10-17, Paul McKernan (11) 38pts ; 18 plus, Cathal Graffin (18) 37pts. Here, 8 win 8 golf balls apiece for their optional twos entry. Meanwhile, the overall result in the annual Sperrin Cup competition against neighbours Killymoon, saw the honours quite evenly shared. It reads; 1st, Frank McGuigan ( Killymoon) (12) 137; 2nd, John Joe Rocks (5) 138 ; 3rd, Martin Kelly (18) 139 (on better back nine ) ; Gross- Mark Watters (1) 145 ; handicap category 0-9, Dermot Kelly (6) 144 ( on count back ) ; 10-13, Chris Hanson (13) ( Killymoon) (13) 140; 14 –17, Paddy McGuigan (Killymoon) (15) 139; 18 plus – Peter Cassidy (Killymoon) (27) 143.

Two recent Seniors (over 50s) Open Stablefords have brought the following outcomes ; 1st – L.Hutchinson (23) 32pts. Optional twos winner – L.Diamond, 10 golf balls. And, 1st – M.Collins (23) 38pts (on better back nine ) ; 2nd, J.Hegarty (21) 38pts ; 3rd, M.Gillen ( City of Derry) (13) 36pts ; 4th , K.Toner (6) 34pts. There were 7 optional twos winners, getting 7 golf balls each.

The final of the annual Tolite Trophy club matchplay will feature A Miller and D.Mullan. And, the decider in the Salver will see L. McPeake take on J. Kelly, while the McILwaine Belt final has C. McKee and G.Parke up against A. Donaghy and E.Donaghy.

Alma McCrone has won the Moyola Ladies Cup returning a fine score of 40pts, a result which pushes her into third place in the merit league table. Runner up was Monica Collins, 38pts, while the optional twos winners were Christine Crockett and Margaret Murphy.

Those wishing to compete in the annual Autumn League, should enter name and handicap as soon as possible. Teams here will be drawn this Friday, September 17. Entry fee being 8, this league will run from Wednesday, September 22, until Tuesday November 16.

Already, entries are now being taken for the annual Winter League competition. This year, it will consist of 8 players in each team, names to be put in the Convenors box at the computer before Sunday September 25.

Saturday brings the September monthly Medal Stroke competition. Play off white tees, this event also counts towards the golfer of the year. Sunday sees a Sweep Stableford while the Seniors (over 50s) Open Stablefords continue on Monday. The ladies hope to commence their annual Autumn League next Wednesday.
